Art in the Streets

The Geffen Contemporary at MoCA is hosting a huge exhibition titled "Art in the Streets" currently and will run until August 8th of this year. I had the pleasure to check it out in person this past long weekend. and simply put, I was wowed.

The exhibition showcases artworks and installations by 50 of the most dynamic artists from the street art and graffiti community. these artists include the famous late Keith Haring, Mr. Cartoon, Barry McGee, Banksy, Rammellzee, Futura, Terry Richardson, Larry Clark, KAWS...

I never liked the idea of tagging or graffiti in general, but there's something incredibly charming about what these artists do. The grittiness and creativity is just unbelievable. the fact that MoCA was able to organize such an exhibition that traces the development of street art all the way back from the 70's to what it has become today, is almost as impressive and astonishing as any piece of art that they're showing.

As mentioned above, this show is in Cali until August 8th, then it'll travel to the Brooklyn Museum and will be on view from March 30 to July 8 of 2012. for more info about the exhibition check out MoCA's blog .

on a side note, artist Space Invader was arrested in LA for vandalism around the time the exhibition opened.

These are skate ramps that Space Invader designed for the Nike SB team at MoCA, there's avideo of Nike SB team members skating on them on the opening day. Skating at a museum is totally wild!!

Keith Haring's scrap book...priceless.

crazy installation of the late Rammellzee's art, I think he's as crazy as his work.

Banksy's corner, the one on the lower left of the photo above is one of his very few paintings without using stencils.

KAWS's work from mid-90s, I would love love love to have that Kate Moss poster...

this corner is the creepiest part, in my opinion, of the exhibition. I dare anyone to go thru this part alone. by Neckface.

  2. that's done by (Space) Invader, a French street artist. I'm sure you've see his stuff, 'cause he's done this sort of tagging all over the world.

you can read more about him here.
